The extensive trade of steel caused the growth of Pittsburgh and its economy. However, there was a sudden collapse in the region's steel industry, but has managed to continue on strongly since then. The primary industries have shifted more towards high technology like robotics, health care, nuclear engineering, tourism, biomedical technology, finance, and services. You won't even get more opportunities than this when relocating to Toronto! Education is also a major employer, from primary schools all the way through magnet schools, specialized professional institutes and highly ranked universities. In fact, Pittsburgh still maintains its status as a corporate headquarters city, with seven Fortune 500 companies that have situated themselves in the city. This places Pittsburgh in a tie for the 6th-most Fortune 500 headquarters in the nation.
Pittsburgh has grown its industry base recently to include technology, retail, finance, and medicine. The largest employer in the city is the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, followed closely by the University of Pittsburgh.
