Pittsburgh is one of the most exciting and dynamic American cities in which to pursue your career. If you are considering a change to your career or starting a new one entirely, consider some of the features and benefits that the city's job market has to offer.

Known as "The Steel City" for its history as a major steel manufacturing base, Pittsburgh's main industries have recently shifted to the High Tech sectors, such as nuclear engineering, robotics, biomedical manufacturing and the like. As such, there has been a boom in demand for specialized skills such as electronic circuit design and computer programming. If you are interested in this field, you will have a number of job opportunities to chose from.

For those that are technically inclined, the city is still home to major manufacturers. If you have skills in anything from valve repair to line assembly, you may find that there are a number of area employers interested in them.

The downtown area has been able to retain it's economical influence and add jobs despite the national financial downturn. With it's growth, development projects are always on the lookout for a new electrician or deck builder. Maine to Maryland, people come from across America to join Pittsburgh's workforce. As such, Pittsburgh is ranked in the top 25 cities in the nation for jobs inside an urban core and 6th overall in job density.

The city is home to eight Fortune 500 corporate headquarters. The areas largest employers include RAND, Google, American Eagle Outfitters, Guru.com, U.S. Steel, J.J. Heinz Company, Allegheny Technologies and PPG Industries. If you know your way around a drive pulley or forklift, you will find a number of positions available with them alongside postings for executives, sales and customer service representatives.

For those in the medical field, there are a number of openings frequently arising in your field. From a nurse who can operate a pressure calibrator to radiologists who can operate the latest MRI machine, medical specialists are in high demand. Overall, the Pittsburgh largest employer is the University of Pittsburgh with almost 11,000 employees and the university's Medical Center at almost 50,000 employees.

Local industry has also broadened lately to include retail, medical and financial employers. Pittsburgh is also home to large financial institutions such as PNC Financial Services and the regional headquarters of The Bank of New York Mellon. Bayer and Alcoa also have large operations in the city, as do GlaxoSmithKline, Lanxess, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, FedEx Ground, General Nutrician Center and Nova Chemicals.
